Models Sean and Rose channelled the spirits of deceased poets Edgar Allen Poe, with the Raven recited and re-enacted dramatically, plus Sylvia Plath and Dorothy Parker. Nikki Shaill, host and Director of Art Macabre and Kingston born-and-bred, also shared a poem written when she was at school in the area. Baudelaire’s Flowers of Evils rounded off the night. We played poems read by Plath herself- a haunting, powerful sound.

We loved welcoming lots of new faces to Kingston Cass Art’s first upstairs workshop. We’ll be back in the space again soon for CHILLED TO THE BONE, if you fancy some drawing south of the river? It was ace to see some fresh Kingston University Illustration students there too.

We also celebrated THE BIG DRAW at this event – as part of the Campaign for Drawing.

These are my hands, My knees. I may be skin and gone, Nevertheless, I am the same, identical woman…Dying Is an art, like everything else, I do it exceptionally well. I do it so it feels like hell. I do it so it feels real. I guess you could say I’ve a call.

Daddy, I have had to kill you. You died before I had time – Marble-heavy, a bag full of God, Ghastly statue with one gray toe as Big as a Frisco seal…If I’ve killed one man I’ve killed two—The vampire who said he was you And drank my blood for a year, Seven years, if you want to know. Daddy, you can lie back now. There’s a stake in your fat black heart…

Sylvia Plath, Daddy

I didn’t want flowers, I only wanted to lie with my hands turned up and be utterly empty. How free it is, you have no idea how free— The peacefulness is so big it dazes you.

Sylvia Plath, Tulips
